I could really use a “moai” right now. In Okinawan culture, moais are committed social circles that pool their money to help one another through hard times. That spirit of community is what I’m holding onto as I ask for support. I need hernia surgery, and I simply can’t afford it on my own right now. I have health insurance but my deductible is $6500, and Denver-area hernia surgery starts at about that amount. On top of that, I make my living through gig work, and I’ll need to turn down jobs for three to four weeks while I recover, which means losing an estimated $4000 to $5000 in income.

I’m usually a pretty fearless person. I dance professionally atop stilts and I serenade strangers in a diaper. But lately, the financial side of this has been weighing on me.
