Eighty Years Young

Eighty Years Young

She was born in Indiana, 1945
Nancy and sister Pansy, grew up on a farm, that's right
Utters were milked there, dollars earned
College half financed, work ethic learned

When Nancy was little, Nancy, she used to hide
behind her momma's legs, when meeting people, she was shy
it's hard to believe, considering her now
but back then Nancy, talked mostly to cows

Still, Nancy was independent, could entertain herself
Pansy just could not seem to, Pansy really wanted help
followed sis around, begging, 'Play with me.'
her pleas fell on deaf ears, 'cause Nancy was busy

They used to pick strawberries, try to fill a basket up
but baskets, stayed mostly empty, while bellies, they got stuffed
set up a table between their beds
wouldn't sleep, flashlight Monopoly instead

they once fought over a boy, they both liked the same one
Nancy chased Pansy with a hose, a hose they used for cow milkin'
Nancy stabbed Pansy with a fork one time
while parents were bowling, no witnesses—no crime

One year, 'round about Christmas, sisters they hatched a plan
opened up all their presents, rewrapped 'em and put 'em back
On Christmas morning, they tried to act surprised
mom and dad weren't fooled, no wool pulled o'er eyes

When Nancy got her license, sisters went to the drive-in
Nancy ran over a curb, bumped a couple cars and then
wanted to order, worked up an appetite, see
Pansy said, 'Let's split!' - car owners might be peeved

Nancy went to Taylor, also Ball State U.
mathematics, Nancy studied, Nancy did the math, it's true
She was a teacher, for fifty years
Germany, Indy, Cali and right here

Brought a friend home from college, brought a friend to the farm
momma cooked a big meal and yeast rolls, Nancy's friend was alarmed
Nancy and Pansy, ate everything in sight
five rolls each and chicken, mashed taters and pie

Germany, Nancy lived there, in Europe, she learned to ski
traveled to most its countries, Holland, Spain, Italy
Ireland, Sweden, France and Norway
Belgium, also Greece, oh and the UK

Nancy, she met Darrell, at Cowboys, it's a bar
country line dance lessons, 'Achy Breaky Heart'
that was the hardest, Nancy practiced, sure
in the gravel driveway, she shared with her neighbors

She and Darrell both have two kids, RIP Brent, gone too soon
Jamie's raising kids in Falcon, Roxy's raising hers in Duluth
Justin's in Montana, assists a physical therapist
I entertain in Denver, my family calls me Dustin

then there's all the grandkids, Luca, Alex, Kai, Tynlee
Natalie, Cheyenne, Aurora, Eva and McKinley
The oldest's Aurora, she used to sing my song
the one about brain farts, mom didn't sing along

Nancy, she plays tennis, once played in a tournament
When she had a bun in the oven, was almost nine months pregnant
Seven days later, in the delivery room
Roxanna was born, wearing tennis shoes

Also plays pickle ball, has amassed a thousand cows
(stuffed animals, knick knacks, you name it)
Crochets, crafts, knits, gardens, antiques, rides horses—wow
in 4-H, learned to sew, little did she know
her stilt unicorn son, she would one day clothe

Toastmasters, she's a member, 45 years to date
speaking, it doesn't scare her, she is comfy on the stage
she's been a leader, a district officer
Singapore, Indy, been to clubs all over

Nancy Pants, I like to call her, eight decades to date
may live on a ranch out in Peyton, but she's been all over the place
47 states now, 24 countries
her travel agent, she stays busy
